Point & Click:Week 3

Week 3

Monday Session 26-3-18 (11 Hours)

Todays session was all about foley. As we couldn't secure any vocal talent for today we continued in earnest with the foley recordings. The biggest challenge we found today was sound proofing in the C24 studio is not up to scratch for recording subtle sounds. There is bleed from adjoining classrooms, hallways and live rooms from studios down the hall. The frustrations where real as we are trying to record quite footsteps and all we were capturing is room noise.

We did manage to get a fair few sounds recorded . We employed a colour coding system where orange was recorded sounds that weren't ready for mixing yet and yellow was for sounds recorded and placed ready for mixing.

We recorded all the cigarette inhales and burns using a vaporisers as well as metal trays and knives from the set. This was a very productive session. we utilised our foley asset list and checked off assets as we progressed.

Wednesday Session 28-3-18 (8hours)

Today saw new challenges arise for this project, unfortunately both our vocal talents were sick. This meant there would be no longer be able o record ADR during this session. This was a blessing in disguise as 2 of our team were needed for another project and I had time to work on the foley from Monday. I EQ'd and processed many sounds to get them to sound really great and ready for mixing.

Then I turned my attention to the keyboard clicks. When I began I had no idea what I was getting myself into. This 6 hour ordeal was a test of patience and diligence. Using the location recording that was synched to playback I set about the task of slicing this sample into many pieces and placing them to match the key strokes in the film. The story calls for loud proficient typing however, during the scenes where he is typing the speed and emphasis changes as he is effected by the phone conversation. There is also a scene where clicks need to line up with what is being displayed on screen.

Using clip gain i was able to change the feeling of individual strikes to give the sound a more natural feel and line up with the pictures.

Reflection

Despite the hiccups of sick actors and overcommitted team members we are still on schedule. This week has shown the strength of our production plan having factored in an extra 2 weeks for just such an occurrence was a great move. This will allow us to reschedule actors and sessions while still delivering on time. For my keyboard session I was amazed at just how long it took to complete for such a small part in the film. In future I may not get so bogged down in one sound but I am happy with the way it turned out. Especially as it's the only location recording we will use in the final product.
