A Female Touch

Vocals

As you probably know I'm working on my first ever Techno tune and it's off to a great start. Today Amor, Sasha Bernardes and myself were in the studio for a production meeting and to record the vocals for this tune. Sasha has really got rolling with our graphics for this piece with a simple but perfect black and white animation that really suits the sound we are going for. We gave her a link to some artwork from a local techno party as a refference.

We originally intended to record my voice speaking the quote from Leopold Stokowski (see previous post) however, in the studio we convinced Sash to do the honours and I couldn't be happier with the result.

Recording

For the recording we chose 2 microphones. Firstly the RØDE K2 condenser microphone was our main choice for its ultra low noise floor and variable polarity patterns. After some experimentation we settled on using the microphone in Omnidirectional mode as it seemed to really capture Sasha's whisper the way we wanted. The second microphone we chose was the RØDE M1, this live dynamic microphone was ideal for our application as we chose to set it up off axis to capture and boost the mid range frequencies in the recording and fill it out a bit more.

Unfortunately I forgot to take a photo of our setup however, it looked very similar to this with the second microphone on an upward 45 degree off axis angle.

Result

The final product cam out great we recorded the whole quote a few different ways until we found the exact sound we were looking for. Here are the actual samples we are using in the track.

This studio session went really well. As a team we worked cohesively according to our plan and managed to get everything done in an hour. We had a few challenges with a punk band being recorded just across the hall in another studio. A quick chat with their engineer and we got 10 minutes of "Silence" to record our whisper.
